How many heartbeats does one person have in a lifetime??

An old friend from years past got me thinking about this…heartbeats…how many have I used and how many do I have left…and how exactly will I spend them?

So…let’s say I live to be 75 (average life expectancy) …that gives me 15 more years of heartbeats at a rate 72  of beats a minute…to use…I am not going to bore you with the math.

Hmmm….it seems I have used up a good percentage of MY available heartbeats…so I had better not waste what may be remaining.

I also got wondering…how did  I spent all those past heartbeats ?

Some years ago I spend numerous heartbeats … writing children’s stories/poems.  Last week when cleaning out a space in my home, I found a binder with all the creations I had long since forgotten about. In thinking about heartbeats…I thought I would share some of them here on this blog …I suppose in doing this…

This is a way of sharing my present and past heartbeats with all of you.??

My mom will always tell me

“No, no, you shouldn’t, don’t

I find that quite confusing

Cause normally I won’t

But when she says “don’t do that !!!”

Whatever that might be

She makes me think about it

I get confused…you see???

Stock Photo #1569R-9034345, Boy pouting at kitchen table, mother shaking her finger

When mom says please don’t do that

the first thing that I think

I really want to try that

Before I can even blink

Like when she says “don’t eat that”

before she has a clue

that thing if right inside my mouth

And I begin to chew

Boy Eating : little boy eating cookies on white background isolated

When in the tub… mom always says

“Don’t splash and please no bubbles”

But splashing makes the bath such fun

Which always causes trouble

Why does mom say “Don’t touch that” ??

Cause it makes me want to try

And so I touch it quickly

And then she wonders why??

On days when it is rainy

with big  puddles on my street

Why does she yell  “No splashing Sam”

Then… I can’t control my feet

And when I crawl in bed at night

Mom says  ” Don’t suck your thumb”

But that just makes me want to

Isn’t that just  dumb?

Mom gives me straws to drink my milk

Then says “No blowing bubbles”

If she would just not say such things

I’d cause her fewer troubles

My mother always tells me

She wants me to be good

If she didn’t give such fun ideas

I’d behave…I know I could.

Thanks for sharing my heartbeats today….I hope you enjoyed the first of many kids stories.

Hope is the state which promotes the belief

in a good outcome related to

events and circumstances in one’s life..

Think about it for a minute….unconciously we are all… hoping…hoping everyday…all the time without even thinking….. hoping that it will be sunny…hoping that we get to work on time…hoping the traffic  light does not turn red….hoping  you will  receive an email from a friend….and the list could go on and on.  We hope all the time.

There are of course… times when hoping is what helps us to get through a tough day or a difficult time and is more conscious thought.

It is at those moments  when having hope is what gets us through the day.

Hope, like the gleaming taper’s light,

adorns and cheers our way;

and still, as darker grows the night,

Emits a brighter ray.

   [Oliver Goldsmith]

Now… I am the first to say that, by just hoping ,we cannot  make sure a good outcome to occur…however…it can sure make you feel better…more positive about the possible future…

So if all of this is true…why would we ever, ever want to…TAKE AWAY ANOTHER PERSON’S HOPE?

Oh no..!!!!!  Makes me wonder.. have I ever taken away someone’s hope??

I found this quote and it made me smile…

mostly because…

even in it’s shortness… it says so much.

be kind whenever possible…it is always possible

This simple little statement made me wonder … it sounds so simple…BE KIND…yet in practice…it is not…However…for  us to be kind…it does not cost us anything…it does not hurt us…it doesn’t take much of our time…and….we all know how to do it…so why then… is it so difficult???

I would guess that we can all very easily…think of a time  when someone …was  NOT kind to us…when someone said or did something that hurt…that made us feel bad…or….how about the times when…we have done that to others…when we have not been kind.

Why if being kind… is such an easy thing to do….do people choose NOT TO  BE..?

I would like to believe that …we all want to be kindwe all do our best to be …as kind as we can be…so why are there times we are not??… Could it be that we don’t really think about it?? …Could it be that we don’t realize our unkindness??…Could  it be that we are in such a rush to get on with our lives….that we sometimes…forget about those around us??…Maybe it is that we are just too tired to even consider it some days…being kind.

I think you would agree that. ..people love it when  someone is kind to them…..and that…it sure make us feel good when we are kind to someone… so why then… why wouldn’t we all want to be kinder to each other …more often???…Do we not like feeling good???….Is it that other things and emotions ….get in our way and make being kind … more difficult than it should be?

Sure we all partake in those special little acts of kindness…those good Samaritan acts… But what about our everyday actions??…How kind conscious are we with them???…How kind conscious are we to our kids…our husbands….the people we see everyday??…How kind are we from minute to minute???…Is it possible to be kinder…or not???…If there were a seminar on learning to be kind….how many of us would consider taking part?.

How kind do you want to be???… Think about it.

Be kind whenever possible…it is always possible

isn’t it???

I was reading a book today and got to thinking about words…words in the English language…words that don’t make any sense…and…I kept coming up with more  and more examples…and I thought…Imagine being a newcomer to the English language and trying to make sense of it… our language is often used… in such contradictory ways….for example…

“Civil War”-I don’t remember ever reading about… any war being …CIVIL …..”Greenland”-why call a land that is white… most of the time…GREEN???….”Death Valley”-strange name for a place …having…  a LIVING population….”Eggplant”-it may be a plant…but not the size or color or texture of any egg I’ve ever seen…”catgut”–actually comes from a sheep….and …an “underdog”- has nothing to do with a dog.

Words…Ok now…imagine being new to our language and telling someone …When my grandfather “kicked the bucket”…there were a lot of”crocodile tears”…or…The “boob tube” put me” in hot water”…or…My mother is always “splitting hairs” and “picking holes in things”…or…He was running down the hill …when he “hit the wall”.

And …how about…have you ever received an invitation to a “political PARTY”??…or…have you ever been  “in the same boat” as  a “lucky duck”??…What kind of umbrella might  one need when it is “raining cats and dogs”??…Does a “life-preserver” really preserve….Why are “bangs” so quiet???…and…Why is the “hot seat”…never really hot to the touch??

Words, words, words….I can’t begin to imagine how confusing it would all be …if I were to be trying to learn English…I do think we must have one of the most convoluted languages there is…When I was attempting to learn French…it seemed  more “straight forward”…hmmmm….          Or is the French language ….  just the same…???

Oh no!!!  …Could it be… that I just kept understanding and taking everyone literally!!!….wow…now that’s a scary thought.

I will be at McNally Robinson’s Bookstore on Dec. 4th…1-3 to sign books…come visit and pick up some Christmas gifts at the same time.

Check out my new visitor counters that show countries visitors are from ….I am now curious to see what shows up ..I know I have had visitors from  places other than Canada…hmmm…I’ll just have to wait and see. Calling visitors from around the globe to check in!!!!

27 days left till Christmas morning….

Ever hear a word being said and you thought to yourself…hmmm….I wonder what that means???…Have you ever been listening to speech and someone uses a word that you have never heard before… and …you get  so caught up with that word…and actually didn’t hear much of what followed???…

Well…that is exactly what happened to me last night….someone was giving a little talk and used the word…”EFFUSIVE”…which threw me right off as I had no idea what it meant…It was used in order to explain someone’s personality…and so…I figured… it had to be something good or it wouldn’t have been said with 20 people present..but…

I thought about it a bit…hmmm…should I let it go…or do I  ask for the meaning???…so …at an opportune time …I decided to dive in…I asked my friend…a past school teacher…what is the meaning of that word????….He did not answer but instead…turned to another retired teacher…and asked him if he would clarify it for me….The second person  then  admitted that …he did not really know that answer…AHA!!!….I was not alone in my ignorance…and …I would venture to think that… although many in the room …”had an idea of the word’s meaning”…they truly did not know it.

Ever found yourself in a like situation???…Wanting to ask for clarification but not sure if you should???…Wondering if you are the only one present…who doesn’t understand????…Waiting and hoping that someone will speak up and ask YOUR  question????…Have you ever weighed your  need to know…as opposed to the possibility of… embarrassing yourself????…

I wonder how much we have all missed or misunderstood…just because we were afraid to ask???…As children…all we do is ask !!!!…what…when …how…why….where….over and over again…that is one way children learn…Why is it that as we get older…we hesitate to ask….Can it be that we feel we have nothing more to learn from others???….Can it be that we want to appear smarter than we really are????….Can it be that it is just not that important to know????…or….Can it be that we are afraid to ask???

Well…for those of you out who need to know..I will clarify effusive for you…

effusive [ɪˈfjuːsɪv]

extravagantly demonstrative of emotion; gushing, uttered with unrestrained enthusiasm, burbling, gushy,
Do you know someone who is effusive???….Are you effusive????
Here is another interesting piece of art….made out of chocolate this time….
Who would ever have the heart to actually eat such a beautiful creation…???

A friend and I decided to have some fun and reserve a table at a local xmas craft show in November. My book her pottery and some other interesting items we will have for sale that day…..but….we are looking for a name…a name to call us… a name we can put on our tags.

Last night we brainstormed with our husbands and good friends to see if we could come up with some interesting name/word to call ourselves that day.  We had such fun  doing that but have not come up with anything solid as of yet.  We want it to be different…even a nonsense word that sounds cool could be good.

I am tossing this out to all of you as the more ideas we get the better the chances of coming up with different names/words.  We tried taking the letters  from our first names and combining them….nothing…we tried taking the letters from our last names and combining them…nothing.  Then we went on to names of flowers.. So after covering two pages with possibilities…we had still not come up with anything. Then we thought ….herbs.  We liked one a bit …but not totally convinced.

Have you got a thought or two????   We are two women, with silver gray hair, both shortish, both are artsy and have tried all sorts , have been friends for decades, who have both lived in a variety of cities/towns ,  in our lifetimes.  We would love it if you would share any ideas you may have.

Names, names and more names…what is in a name????

Yes it is Monday again and time for a new word. This week it will be a small on again…so that maybe I will be able to remember it and use it some time……

ADZ    … a cutting tool

Now how is that for a good Scrabble word????

Today I spent quite a few hours and 3 cups of coffee …working on this …my to be quilted Sam banner.  So far I had to redo the head and the arms. Next will be the dotted shoe laces and then the face.

When I started getting a book published little did I know I would get so involved in the character Sam.  He sure is keeping me busy and out of trouble.

Today I have a bit of ….Cabin fever  a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in,for an extended period [1]The phrase is also used humorously to indicate simple boredom from being home alone.[2] The term was first recorded in 1918.[3] Other references have the term in use at least to 1906. An 1820 reference is to an actual fever, common in Ireland, resulting from eating watery potatoes during wet years.

I am going to have to make a call or two this week …just to get out of the house and have lunch with a friend or something!!!  I feel like Sam has kept me way too busy and I need to get out of the house….

Not feeling too pensive today and so will just leave you all with this…

Today is Tuesday…and since I missed a word for yesterday….I have one for you today. And what a word it is.  My sister  Sharon, found it and thought I might want to share it with all of you……

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis ..’a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, causing inflammation in the lungs.’

This 45 letter word was coined to serve as the longest English word and is the longest word ever to appear in an English language dictionary.

There…that is  what I call a WORD !!  now maybe that will make  up for all the past weeks I missed a word for the week.  And since I was trying to find 3 letter words …this is like 15 of them.. Hmmm…does that give me future opportunity to miss a Monday without any guilt???  Time will tell.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning”. …Maya Angelou

News on the book publishing front…just as I  was beginning to relax…having finished all the editing…another email came  from my publisher about ….EBooks….which will be a part of my book when you buy it.  I forgot all about this!!!    So, in preparing for this I was given 4 voices to choose from…to be the voice of my Sam’s Weird Afternoon.

After listening to all four…eyes open…eyes closed…eyes open again…I  had picked my favorite. Then I asked my husband to listen and tell me what he thought before I said anything.  We both agreed and I sent that info back to Tate Publishing.  The voice I chose was a male whose voice was very clear and articulate with lots of intonation.  As the pictures in my book have clean lines , are colorful and fun…I think I have chosen the best voice.

Not as simple as the toss of a coin.

I did have the option of using my own voice…getting it recorded in a studio…however…I like the idea of using a male voice which is why I chose to go with a Tate narrator.  I didn’t realize I had input into this part of the process..I just thought they developed it.  So one more phase is in the works and I am anxious to hear the voice I chose… reading my words!!

Changing something on the computer is like finding yourself in a have to get your bearings...turn around to find your way out

Yesterday I had to make a change on my computer….to windows live.  I am always hesitant in making any changes on the computer but this time it went smoothly. I did have to call the help desk once …to find out I had missed the word one space. Other than that, it all seems to be working just fine.  Computers…they are great when they are working but miserable when they aren’t. I was afraid this might be one of those times.   Whewww…..not at all.

Collection time again…..

Tomorrow will be the end of this collection….and another will begin.

Have you received a buss today?

You may be wondering exactly what a buss is…well…it is something you might have received from your partner this morning…or…it is something you might have received from an acquaintance on New Year’s Eve…

BUSS….a rude or playful kiss    Pronunciation: \ˈbəs\

Had I seen this word in a sentence in a book or article, I might have thought it was just a typo and never considered it again. But there you have it…a small word, one a person might even consider using and a possible Scrabble word. Although,  I can’t imagine that I would really want use two s’  like this but then you never know.

I think my legs are actually too short to even consider these!

Yesterday I called my daughter and one of the first things she asked me is…is your Sam finished yet?  It was kind of like a wake up call as I hadn’t thought  about my Sam figurine since her visit.  So this morning I took him and all my sculpey out and put it on the dining table so I would get back to him.

I also took out my calendar and decided I needed to organize my time and my tasks…book tasks that is ….so that when Sam is ready to be launched, I will be too.  It seems like I have tons of time before then but I don’t want to look back and wish I had been more organized.  I keep working on my email lists…wow…I have organized over 15 different email lists….good friends, email friends, book friends, old friends, friends from afar, family, book stores, public libraries, school libraries, blog  commenters, local businesses and so on.

I have been told  to keep the lists under 70 because otherwise the internet may identify an email as spam and never get out there…now that would be a waste of time. So before I send out anything, I will check my email lists to be sure they are small enough.

It is very interesting once you get started with making such lists.  It is amazing how many people you find out you have a connection to

Footwear for all those Dr. Seuss lovers!

and how many places you should be connected to if you want people to know about your book. I suppose it is the same if it is a piece of art you want to sell or a service you can provide. If you are on Facebook and you have ever gone into GROUPS, you will find there are tons of different groups…some with two members and others with thousands. I have joined a number of groups that pertain to children’s books , writing, collecting, quilting , Sams, children, and even one for all people named   Sally Anne (of which there are only two of us right now). It takes time to check them all out but I believe it is all time well spent.

How are you spending your time these days?  If you have  or are getting a book published, are you putting any time into your marketing plan and if so what have you done that you feel will or has worked?

I was thinking last night about the fact that everyone with a published book is competing with each other. And I began to wonder, is it a bad idea for us to share ideas with each other?  Would it not be smarter to keep my ideas to myself ? But  then I fell asleep …and here I am again sharing…so I guess for me all I can say is ….I must like to share.

Only 5 days till Christmas

Monday…word for the week

lover of words

Now, how is that for a new word…I found this one in a site of ..obscure words... and I just had to share it with you.

Not much time left till 2010…have you been thinking about a New Year’s Resolution?  If you remember I talked about adding something to your life…doing something that will make you feel good …not taking something away. Make it something that will improve your quality of life…something that you can actually do for yourself .  Forget the old ….stop smoking or loose weight…or eat less chocolate cause we all know it just is not going to happen and all that will do is make you feel bad.  At the end of the year of 2010, you should be able to look back and say..

Wow…I kept my resolution….now..what will I do for 2011?

I am still thinking about mine.  Buying only vine ripened tomatoes all this year….was a good one and the only time I could not do it was when they were not available at the store.  So now…what to do for 2010?  Once I have it I will let you know. Any ideas out there???

I made this one...the head is made out of a wooden ball.

Here is a little tidbit of information…Did you know …  today is the birthday of the Crossword Puzzle?

The first crossword puzzle created by Arthur Wynne and was published in the “New York World” 1913 …on this day. He first named his new creation a word-cross, but changed it to cross-word a few weeks later.

I love crossword puzzles. Every Sunday morning I take out the Detour section of our Winnipeg Free Press and get to work on their….now….three crossword puzzles.

Oh no…I just realized that I was so busy this weekend , I never even got the weekend paper!!

Crep’i·tus noun [ Latin , from crepare to crack.]

A grating sound and sensation created when two rough surfaces in the human body come into contact – for example, in osteoarthritic joints or fractured bones rub together.     or……

The noise produced by a sudden discharge of wind from the bowels.

Maybe if I add a photo to each word it might help me to remember it.

pedantic |pəˈdantik

a person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning

How will I ever remember this one?

Susan, thanks for the new word.

19 days till Christmas.

Tomorrow I am hoping to hear from my illustrator on how it is all going. I must tell you I received an interesting email today…someone read about my idea about using shoe laces to hand out at book signing…and she HAS shoelaces and would love to help me out! I have emailed her and hope to hear from her about different types. I am finding it amazing all the people who have connected with my blog.

Today is Sunday however I want to talk a bit about words…

Words for the year …yes…I just found out …there are WORDS FOR THE YEAR !!  And in my weekend paper, the Feed Your intellect section, that is exactly what they discussed. It seems some of the past words have been, Mom in 1996… metrosexual in 2003, have you ever had reason to use THAT one?? or  purple state in 2004, and millennium bug in 1997…have you heard that one lately???  I am not quite sure of the reasoning for a yearly word, any thoughts on that one?

It seems that in 2009 the word is…unfriendthe heartless act of removing someone as a ‘friend’ on Facebook or other social network.

So I ask you, have you decided to unfriend someone lately??  First of all, I probably have a lot of ‘friends’ who are not really my friends so would it really be a heartless act to unfriend them?  How can an act be heartless if there are no emotional ties between two people? Oh yes, some of my ‘friends’ are really my friends and I suppose to unfriend one of them might fall into that category, but why would I unfriend a true friend?

So now I am wondering about my next word for the week…..hmmm, what will it be  for tomorrow?

Yes…it is Monday once again and time for a new word for my vocabulay.
re·con·dite              \ˈre-kən-ˌdīt, ri-ˈkän-\

1 : hidden from sight : concealed
2 : difficult or impossible for one of ordinary understanding or knowledge to comprehend : deep <a recondite subject>
3 : of, relating to, or dealing with something little known or obscure <recondite fact about the origin of the holiday

I have no idea if anyone out there is listening at all, but here is another word . Many of you probably know of and use this word already…but not me. Will I remember this tomorrow???

 Recondite…recondite…recondite…recondite, condealed, concealed, concealed

If this entry  becomes recondite from my view, I may forget it.

I am finally going to start working out in my basement  although… I would really like to keep writing, butI must drag myself away from the keyboard. This is becoming a bit addictive…writing an entry everyday.  Tootles ….

Good morning…here is your word Word For the Week                           Pulcritude  (pŭl’krĭ-tūd’, -tyūd’)
