I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.

I have spent hours on our lake waters the past three years…and each year I am amazed by the changes of the landscape and the wildlife that find a home within.  However…. …Where are all the ducks, geese, small wading birds and muskrat???   Why would there be many one year and almost none  the next???

The only thing that comes to mind is the differing water levels each year.  This year the lake water were extremely high…and moving too fast….could that be the reason???

Was there no place for nesting to take place??   I miss  watching the young grow up…and looking forward to finding them each time I  visit the lake.

However…the  Turtles…the beautiful painted turtles seem to be a constant in the landscape…everyday around 10 am.

I love to float beside them …near the reeds…as they  hug a piece of driftwood and raise the heads toward the sun in unison, is always a special moment.

thCAXRF6AP For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for  everything you gain, you lose something else.

Ralph  Waldo Emerson

Yes…I am missing something this summer…. the creatures …however…I have  spent more time observing the trees and the plants as they grow and change during the summer…more than ever before.  I have observed the changing of the shores…how the rain , sun and wind affect the growth, in and around the waters edge… how the water surface explodes some days with new growth…and how it can  visually change from being glasslike in one spot yet  choppy with waves in another.

Ahhhh…change.  Mother Nature seems to embrace it and accept the consequences .

Now…if only I could be as flexible as she.

Do you think you are unique??…

c646539332609418206376114b79bd6f     Do I think I am unique??? ……If  all of us  are  unique…..does that mean that none of us really are?????

Or….maybe we are equally unique….and so…differently the same???  And….If we are just like everyone else….is anyone really unique at all???

Just something to think ……..

So next time you start to feel like you are special…or unique…remember….so is everyone else.

Yes…there may come a day when our life will flash before our eyes…would ours be worth watching???

Have you ever had a moment … a moment when something caused your life to flash before you???…a moment when something  caused you to take a serious look at the years that have passed. ..how you have  spent them..something that made you wonder about the years to come and how you will spend them???…If your life flashed before you today…can you say…Yes…it was worth watching or do you think you would want to change the channel ???

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had the ability to look back…and change the channel if we did not like what flashed before us???

Well…we all know that is not possible…what is past is past…However .. if our life has not been worth watching…or if our life could be a better watch…do we have the capacity to change that???…Can a person make their life…a …more worth while watch??…In the hustle and bustle of our daily routine…can a person make changes  to  their own channel???…Can we work to change  the inevitable “life flashing  before our eyes” so we will be happy with the channel our life has been on???

That got me wondering…Is it possible in looking back…  that what we see flash before our eyes …is in part …reality combined with our  perceived reality???…Is it possible that the life that might flash before us…is a mixture of…people and events and behaviors…that we have come to believe as our life…but may not have actually occurred as we remember???….Can there be memories of our lives…that  have been manufactured by others…or…redesigned by ourselves to suit our needs and attitudes ???

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.  Albert Einstein

I wonder about this …as there are days I pick up an old journal I have written …and…I read and find to my surprise that…what I wrote about an event or feeling or behavior of a certain day…is very different from what I… now remember it to have been….In some cases it may have been only a few years and still…my memory has …over time… become distorted…So now I wonder about… if my life flashes before me one day…will it be my real life or my life distorted by time and the tricks my memory might have played.

So now I wonder…How  much of my life …that I remember to be my life…really is???…How much is a distortion of it???…When my life flashes before me one day…will I truly be watching my channel or might it be a bad connection somewhere…causing distortion???…

Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.

Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.

Hans Margolius

Think about it….How quiet are  your waters ???…How distorted are your  perceptions???

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; however you are the one who gets burned.

– Buddha

Anger…who of us has never been angry??…Is it true that holding on to that anger …can  cause pain and possibly leave scars??…So I got  to wondering about anger and pain….If this is true then…does  that mean… the angrier a person is the more pain they will inflict upon themselves and the worse the scars will be???

When a person looks at anger as a hot coal…it makes one wonder…why would a person ever want to be angry???…Why would a person want to cause themselves pain…pain that they do not …HAVE…to endure???

But …you are now saying to yourself…but how does a person not get angry??…We all get angry at times…right???…And we all have times that someone or something just riles us up…I bet we have all had times when we were holding onto that hot coal of anger …with intentions of tossing it at someone…and before we even could…the coal/anger had already burned us.

Think about it…what if a person was angry for a very long time???…Would that mean that the pain would last for much longer as well??…And if that is so…wouldn’t it make sense to drop the hot coal…the anger…as soon as possible???…Wouldn’t  it be smart to …not even pick up the hot coal to begin with???….Would anyone …knowingly …consider doing such a thing??

So…you have to wonder…why do we allow ourselves to become angry???….Can anything good …actually come out of such emotions…reactions??…I am sure we have all known at least one person….who seems to be  angry ??…people who are carrying hot coals around with them…all the time… I wonder if they have any idea how that is affecting them…Could it be that the longer a person carries around a hot coal…he begins not to even feel it anymore???…I would hate to think that anyone would actually enjoy holding a hot coal…would they????

Now…this all has me wondering about anger and me…am I carrying any hot coals around at the moment???…And if so…How long have I been carrying them around with me???…I  have some serious thinking to do…and probably a few coals that need to be  dropped…I will think about this next time I feel anger building up…and next time I hope I can be smart enough to ….not  even pick up the  that hot coal…Maybe  the picture  at the start of my post will be a good visual reminder.

What about you….are you lugging around any hot coals ??? Coals you might be wanting to drop??

I once read that when you feel anger beginning to build up…just even for a few seconds…mentally…find and go to your happy place…it might just help let the anger disappear…. POOF!!!..It is worth a try.

I continue to read on in my book…the book chosen by my reading group …The Chicks in the Sticks….to discuss at our next get book club get together…The Happiness Project…and although a number of the “chicks” did not find it interesting or compelling at all, I did. Have you ever started reading a book… one that seemed to appear in your life…just at the right time??…Have you ever thought about that book…and wondered if you had begun reading it 6 months ago…. you would not have enjoyed it as much??…Well for me this book appeared at just the right time in my life…at least that is how it seems to me.

So you may be thinking …why a book about happiness???……Is she is unhappy??…I don’t think so…I am generally a happy person…so…I can’t exactly explain it… however… since I began reading it…I can truly say…I am a happier person …so my thinking is…why try to understand it?.

So how happy can one person be?…If like  honest Abe says...you are as happy as you make up your mind to be... does that mean we never have to be unhappy if we don’t want to be??… I suppose if we had more control over our mind and how we think from moment to moment…maybe that is true…However…I don’t know about you but…it is those darned old emotions that seem to get in the way…they seem to have a mind of their own some days…a mind that seems separate from the one I have control over…making it difficult to keep that happiness quotient up at certain moments.

From what I have now read…it is believed that happiness is not the opposite of sadness…that they are two very different emotions…So ..Does that mean …they can both exist together…side by side???…Does that mean a person can be happy and sad at the same time???…I got to thinking about that and what came to mind was my mom’s death…and yes…I think that is true…I was so sad that she had passed away…yet I was so very happy that she did not have to deal with any more treatments…so…yes…I do believe …happy and sad can sit at the same table.

So would that mean ..

in the absence of happiness…a person is not really sad…but rather…less happy…and in the absence of sadness…a person is not necessarily happy…but rather…just not sad…

Something to think about….

Dr. Seuss’ birthday…has come and gone !!!

If he were still living …this past Wednesday  …March 2nd…he would have been 107 years old…Imagine how many more wonderful stories he could have told…all the weird characters he would have given birth to… if he were still alive…It makes me kind of sad to think about such a loss.

And so…I thought…in his honour… I would share with you…a character ..

A number of years ago I wrote a fun story about a gathering of …weird characters …which I shared with my daughter Michelle…Later that year for christmas…she gave me the most wonderful gift I could ever want….two illustrations to go with my first two characters…here is my favorite…

On my bed

Are my two skinny Zinks

With six eyes that just constantly blink

Having one bigger ear

And green bugs in their hair

They sure let off a terrible stink

By me….2007

What is so very interesting is that…we never discussed it…This is what she imagined from the words I put down on paper!!!  I don’t think I could have imagined anything so creative in my mind…Sure makes me realize how important the words in a kid’s story can really be….She and I have talked about collaborating on a book sometime in the future…my words and her illustrations…

What a dream that would be…

To see it become… reality !!!

Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than the one where they sprang up.’

Oliver Wendell Holmes

I wonder exactly what Tennyson meant when he said…the shell must break before the bird can fly???…Is he saying that events occur only after others do???….or might he mean…that nothing good comes without effort???…or that …if you want to soar you must break through your shell?…I am sure that…if I wanted to look it up…someone has analyzed and interpreted the meaning of this…however…I don’t care to find out.

This all brings me back to my school years and english classes…which I never did really like….It was not the reading that was my dislike…but rather…the interpretation of what I read…well.. not exactly…I had no problem interpreting…It was that I often did not come up with the same one as the teacher’s…which meant that…I was wrong…I had not understood…and so my grades reflected just that….To this day I don’t understand why I had to think like the teacher.

To this day…I think about that…and how great it is… to now…be in a place where I can interpret a story/book..anything for that matter…anyway I want…or…not !!!!…Does that all really matter???….Isn’t a good book …much like a great painting…to be enjoyed …from your mind’s eye???…It all makes me wonder about… how we see and enjoy things…like a good book..Might it  be the symbolism that jumps out at you..or the poetic tone ….or maybe the character development…or possibly even the visual picture it paints in your mind….You might focus on the vocabulary…or…the structure of the story  ….that helps you find enjoyment in it…or maybe it bring back memories….Why do we HAVE TO interpret it at all…but rather…enjoy it!!!!

“Chicks in the Sticks”…a book club I belong to…has caused me to think about all of this…We discuss each book… I suppose we interpret it to some degree…and often there are multiple perceptions …and I find that so very refreshing….many different ways a story is perceived…understood…and enjoyed…I am not really a “group” person…but in this case…it is freeing in a way…and the “group” is what makes it so…and the group…is often attended by a different complement of readers…which again makes it very interesting…hearing a variety of takes on the same book…without getting bad grades!!!

So I ask you…is understanding …simply someone’s perception???…It is said that a person’s perception …is…their reality…and if that is so…is it possible to ever change that reality???….Would a person’s perception have to be altered???…and if so…is that ever a possibility???…Think about it.

When you look at the pics below….what do you perceive??????

Is this a horse in the water…or…a seahorse ???

Are these shoes made of loaves of bread…or…loafers???

A chair covered with grass…or…a lawn chair???

A snail pulling envelopes…or…snail mail????

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what  happened.

As another decade passes for me…in my mind…I do wonder…What the hell happened…for sure…However…I am..for sure… a young person…at least that is my perception of me…How about you???…Young…old…in between…not sure??…Well as each year passes…I tend to check my inner age…and funny thing…it never seems to change much…but why is it then…that the mirror reflects ..Grey hair??? Wrinkles???…Who the heck is that person in the mirror????….Hmmm…Maybe we shouldn’t have all those mirrors… might we be more content without them???

So…It is because of the passing of another birthday for me…that…Today I want to say a word or two about Face Book…Yes..I said Face Book…What might a birthday have to do with Face Book?????…What does the passing of another year have to do with…that social network you either love or hate…that network that they even made a movie about…the movie that I watched while flying over the Pacific ocean last week….Face Book… Well…I am one of those people who love this social network… it keeps me in touch with friends and family who live far away…it allows me to see photos of them and what they are up to….it connects me to people I might never have the chance to see…However…I must admit… at times I can hate it…like when I read  that someone baked a cake …or that someone did not get any sleep last night…or that someone is having a tough day at work…etc…???…What is that all about???…

However…yesterday was one of those days I loved it….Why???….well…I received over 40 emails…over 40 birthday wishes…from family…friends…acquaintances…and even people I have never met… saying Happy Birthday…through Face Book….You may say…ahh…but it only took them a minute to do so…Yes…I will agree with that….the messages  were simple and short…and probably took less than 60 seconds to send…but you know what???…all of those people could have spent that minute …that moment in time….doing something else…but they chose to think of me  …and without Face Book…that moment in time would have been missed…a moment when we were on each others minds….and how cool is that!!!!

So I would say to all of you who use Face Book …Every once in a while…take just a minute…take a minute and connect with someone…Give them a minute of your time …just 60 seconds….and know that when you do so… not only will you be thinking about that person…but they will be thinking about you…as well.

Isn’t it those moments …those moments when we think of someone else…or some one else thinks of us…that bring a smile to our face???…Are not those moments …sometimes…just as important…just as welcomed…as any bigger ones???…Think of all the moments/minutes…are lives are made up of…all the minutes/moments that we remember…all the moments that we shared…or still can share…how precious a moment can actually be !!  So…instead of wondering …”what the hell happened”…instead of wondering where the time went…maybe we should all …instead…think about…were we want our time to go???…How we want to spend our future moments???

Do you have any idea …. how you will spend the next… moments …in your life????

To all of you who have a birthday in February like me….I wish you a HAPPY ONE !!

Is there anyone out there whose birthday falls on Feb. 16th too????

So far…me…Cindy…and Neil…any others?????

Yes…a break..I am not exactly sure why…as this year… it took me way too long to get in the spirit…and..do I want to loose it yet????…..however…before the new year rolls in I will take a break.

I just put another order in for more copies of …Sam’s Weird Afternoon…I am in no rush to get them as I still have a bunch…however…this time I am getting a few free t-shirts along with the order…a little holiday spirit from my publisher possibly????…They will be fun to see…and that made me realize that I needed to wake up Sam!!!

Yes…Along with holidays…Sam has been on the back burner…and I wasn’t sure exactly how to pull him forward…until yesterday….Ever have something like that…something you procrastonated about…something you really DID want to get busy with??…but for some reason…the procrastonating…and all the stress that comes with it..seems to be exactly where you wanted it to be ….for a while anyway…like me and Sam…???

Have you ever had something occur that for some weird reason…made you want to pull that procrastinated thing out…to bring it to the front burner…to get active with it again???…Well…for me that event occurred yesterday…Any author will tell you…book writing is fun…but book marketing is a long..lonely journey….and when that journey seems ever so long…and oh so tireing…it may take an outside influence to get you happily back on track …back on that journey once again….That event for me was a phone call…just one phone call…to my sister…my writer sister…After chatting about holidays, health, family…we got into discussing our book adventures…I cannot put my finger on exactly …what caused me to be re-energized to get back on my jouney…to wake up Sam…and to wake up ME.

Could it have been just chatting with her over the holidays???…or…Maybe it was how we shared our book marketing experiences???…or…Could it have been… just one little thing… that she might have said???…She…my sister Sharon…the one who encouraged me to first write and submit a story…Sharon…13 months older….whom I shared a childhood with…or…could it be the supportive words she gave…that got me wanting to get back on track with Sam..

I suppose I will never know…but one thing I do know…next time I get lost…tired…procrastinate about Sam…I will call her…just to chat for a few minutes….Do you think it is possible …to give energy over the phone…can  energy  pass through the phone wires…could it be that she passed some of  hers on to me???…

My sister and I

This all …Makes me wonder … these days…we use the phone less ….and…. email more….it makes me wonder about…how hearing a voice can give so much more than the written word…and so…hmmm…should I start making more phone calls ???…If a person’s voice…even over the phone can energize another….am I  losing an energy source???…is that why my lights become dim every once in a while????

I was reading a book today and got to thinking about words…words in the English language…words that don’t make any sense…and…I kept coming up with more  and more examples…and I thought…Imagine being a newcomer to the English language and trying to make sense of it… our language is often used… in such contradictory ways….for example…

“Civil War”-I don’t remember ever reading about… any war being …CIVIL …..”Greenland”-why call a land that is white… most of the time…GREEN???….”Death Valley”-strange name for a place …having…  a LIVING population….”Eggplant”-it may be a plant…but not the size or color or texture of any egg I’ve ever seen…”catgut”–actually comes from a sheep….and …an “underdog”- has nothing to do with a dog.

Words…Ok now…imagine being new to our language and telling someone …When my grandfather “kicked the bucket”…there were a lot of”crocodile tears”…or…The “boob tube” put me” in hot water”…or…My mother is always “splitting hairs” and “picking holes in things”…or…He was running down the hill …when he “hit the wall”.

And …how about…have you ever received an invitation to a “political PARTY”??…or…have you ever been  “in the same boat” as  a “lucky duck”??…What kind of umbrella might  one need when it is “raining cats and dogs”??…Does a “life-preserver” really preserve….Why are “bangs” so quiet???…and…Why is the “hot seat”…never really hot to the touch??

Words, words, words….I can’t begin to imagine how confusing it would all be …if I were to be trying to learn English…I do think we must have one of the most convoluted languages there is…When I was attempting to learn French…it seemed  more “straight forward”…hmmmm….          Or is the French language ….  just the same…???

Oh no!!!  …Could it be… that I just kept understanding and taking everyone literally!!!….wow…now that’s a scary thought.

I will be at McNally Robinson’s Bookstore on Dec. 4th…1-3 to sign books…come visit and pick up some Christmas gifts at the same time.

HO HO HO

24 more days till Christmas morning……

I’m singing in the SNOW…lots and lots of SNOW…and it is another good day…The key????….Walking in the morning with beautiful sparkly…white snow…everywhere!!!!  What a wonderful experience.

Snow…think about it for a minute…for many of us it is a normal part of our winter…but…not for everyone…A number of years ago…I met a girl  who moved to Manitoba…from Paraguay…and was living through her first winter with snow…I will always remember her telling me …how amazed she was when she saw her first snowflakes fall from the sky…Why??? I asked…Her answer was …”I never knew snow fell from the sky…I always thought it came up from the ground”…and right then I couldn’t help but smile.

I embrace emerging experience. I participate in discovery. I am a butterfly.
I am not a butterfly collector. I want the experience of the butterfly.

Goes to show how a bit of experience…can open your eyes…can teach you… enlighten you…It makes me wonder…how many misconceptions  we all have…possibly because of… lack of experience???…Just like the snow falling…It makes me wonder…how much misinformation…are we all storing in our mind’s files…and how much of that misinformation …can cause a person…to…deduct…or assume…other false info???

If a person believes that…snow comes up from the ground…one might also suppose that…one  never has to clean off a car…and…the trees…the trees would never be beautifully snow covered…and drifts…would there be any snow drifts???…And if the snow comes up from the ground…would there be snowflakes???…and…how about driving visibility…it would always be pretty good…unless there was a very strong wind…right???

Snow…yes snow… and a walk in it has again…been the key to a very good day…for me…So I think I will keep walking…and…on days when the snow flakes are falling…I hope it will remind me to…keep an open mind…always wonder or question…until I have experienced it myself.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Today I want to share with you some Christmas trees…If you haven’t the space or the money…these may be just what you are needing….

Check out my new visitor counters that show countries visitors are from ….I am now curious to see what shows up ..I know I have had visitors from  places other than Canada…hmmm…I’ll just have to wait and see. Calling visitors from around the globe to check in!!!!

Monkey’s , monkey’s, monkey’s….

If you have visited this site in the past…you may have noticed…a variety of monkey photos…What’s that all about… you might ask yourself???…It is simple…as a child I always wanted a monkey for a pet…When ever our family would go on vacations to …Santa Land…or…Fairy-book Land…or where ever Dad decided to direct the car that year…there seemed to always be an organ grinder… and a little monkey…And it was always the highlight of the day to have him sit on my lap or shoulder.

So then I got to wondering…what exactly is the organ …that  the nice man with the monkey and neat hat…played…I never really paid much attention to it…just the monkey!!!..

And thus…my monkeys…No…I never did get my monkey pet…sob, sob, sob…however I am enjoying the photos I am finding and sharing with all of you.

I was a very fortunate child…Yes…me and my family would go on…holidays where I was able to actually touch the “North Pole”…or ride in “Cinderella’s” pumpkin coach…or watch two cowboys  “Shoot um up” right on the streets of  Cowboy Land…or even meet “Snow White”…. and yes…hold a monkey….Seems a bit corny … however…I don’t think I ever questioned the validity of any of it…and why should I have is what I say????

Are you a believer????….Christmas will soon be upon us…and it is time to think about…. what do you believe /believe in????….Hmmm….

A few more sculptures/art…..using crayons….

Are you wearing a smile today????…read on…I sure am !!!  (no , that is not me)

There are times when …yes…you have to pick your battles…Through the years it has come to my attention…after trying to…that I could not fight them all.  Battles rage all around us everyday…some are real and important…others…not so important… some are perceived and are…really… only as big as we make them…and then there are those battles….that we have no choice but to fight….in hopes of being victorious over our enemy.

November is a month to remember… the battles that have been fought for our freedom…the battles that we did not have to physically engage in…the battles that someone else fought for us…Not only is it a month to remember those battles…but as well…those men and women who did the fighting for us…the men and women who…confronted our enemies…they who  chose to fight those…our… battles.

Over the past week or so…I too have been fighting a battle…No…just an imagined battle…it is not a battle that will just go away……And no…it is not one that will change the world…but it is a battle just the same….and it seems it is one I must fight….Fruit Flies!!!!  Yes, you heard me, Fruit Flies!!!! ….How can that be you may ask????…In the middle of November in Canada????….Beats me!!!…but there they are…hundreds of those tiny little pesky fellows…flying all over my house..

Could it be the bananas on my kitchen counter I wondered???…so away they went…Maybe it’s the empty beer bottles left in the sink….so…after a good washing…off they went too…But the little critters keep coming and coming…I emptied all the trash…I cleaned out under my sink…However…they remained persistent…It was a bit embarrassing when friends were over…and I was getting tired of swooshing my hand before my face in the hopes of removing at least a few from our home..

After hitting them with my hands…towels…sprays…with little change….It was finally yesterday… that I decided to wage war on these little guys…my enemies…I had had it!!!…The fruit flies were about see their demise…I had had enough!!!…I was determined to finally …fight the good fight!!!…And so…just as a  friend had encouraged me to do…I went and found the pretty little glass bug catcher I had bought a few years ago…for just this scenario…I very carefully filled the well in it…with some red wine…set it on the counter before I went to bed last night.

I woke this morning …to see what  appeared …what  might be a winning  battle…There were still a few little critters flying around the kitchen…however…inside the glass bug catcher…were numerous wine soaked bugs stuck to the glass walls…Yea!!!….And there many more still flying around inside the gadget…however…unable to escape the walls of their captor…aha!!!…

I was beginning to feel… victory was on the way…… So…I sat down to have my morning coffee… read a few pages from my book…and for the first time in days…I was able to read without even one little guy…landing on my page.

So there you have it….another battle won…another enemy zapped!!!…Small as a fruit fly may be…when one turns into hundreds…it becomes impossible to ignore…So if you ever see one of those pretty glass bug catcher gadgets…and wonder if it does anything more that look nice…think of me and my battle…and if you are thinking…hmmm…should I buy it???…DO!!!…You never know if or when you may need a battle plan like me.

more from my collection….

It is my writing and having a book published that caused me to develop this site…and if my mind serves me right…at the start…I actually DID write about my publishing  journey…however…with time it seems I have strayed.   I suppose I didn’t want to keep boring you with it all…and how much can a person say about their getting published…a bit self involved …really !!!

But then….there  are days when I get the battery of questions….How many publishers did I have to contact???…How long did it all take???….How is the book going???…Will you be writing another???…I must admit that at first I was a bit tongue tied…but now… I have the answers down pat….Will you be having Sam dolls made???…Have you sent your book to Oprah???…Will you be traveling for book tours???…and the questions go on….

I do once in a while think about some of those things…Will I have another Sam book published???…Maybe….No I haven’t sent my book to Oprah…but I did send it to Ellen Degeneres!!!…Why Ellen you may wonder???…Well…she is such a hoot and makes me laugh all the time…so I thought Sam was more in keeping with her personality…..and so I weekly write on her website asking if the book was received…and just giving her/the show…reasons why my book and I should be considered for a spot on her show….Not a word to date…But I am not going to let that stop me…so once a week I will keep writing on her site. Here is a link to her site…just in case you want to put in a good word for me…. http://ellen.warnerbros.com/show/

So…how hard can it be you may wonder???  Well….Let me tell you…pretty darn hard!!

I am on head #4 and either it is too small…too round…too skinny…pin head looking…and it seems no matter how hard I try to make a better pattern…it just does not look anything like Sam from my book!!!  So I think it is time to rethink and maybe do a bit more research on-line. I have watched many tutorials on you tube and it looked so easy…ha!!  I guess if had been making them for years…it would be easy.

So I will go take a few pictures to give you an idea of what I am talking about.  However…so as not to have them go to waste…I have finished them for the kids to play with….see….

I actually think the harder I try the worse they are…but that will not stop me. I am determined to have one to bring with me on Oct. 16th reading that looks kind of like Sam. I will let you know if I am successful or not.  The one good thing about it all is I am having fun!!!

Let’s get back to sand and my thoughts on it….or should I say…others thoughts on it….

  • To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower. Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour.  William Blake
  • Time is like a handful of sand…the tighter you grasp it…the faster it runs through your fingers.
  • Our best built certainties are but sand houses and subject to damage from any wind of doubt that blows.  Mark Twain

  • Write injuries in sand, kindnesses in marble.  French proverb
  • You throw the sand against the windand the wind blows it back again.  William Blake

I am unpacked and getting back into the regular schedule of my life…drinking the great coffee  my husband makes every morning, eating at least one salad a day, and blogging !!  It has been over a week and not blogging!  I thought for sure I was going to have some strange kind of withdrawal symptoms…but NO…not a one. I was so busy I didn’t even have time to miss this.

But now I am home and the computer calls me…so…here I sit…my mind thinking faster than I can write and my two dogs curled up at my feet., a coffee on my desk ….. Ahhh…what more can a person ask for.

So now…getting to the motivation thingy….Puppets…yes puppets..I think this is going to be my newest book motivation.  Book motivation you may be thinking????  What does a puppet have to do with a book????  Well,  Sam of course !!   I am going to practice making puppets and hopefully get good enough to be able to make one that looks  like my Sam.  My thinking is ….what a great item to bring with me when reading to children.  Maybe I can make a number of them to bring with me for the kids to try???   OK  now, maybe I am getting ahead of myself…but ….see what I mean about motivating me???

I think it was also Vancouver. It is such a creative, eclectic , artsy… place.  I always love how I feel when I come home from there.

If you have gone to my page of where Sam has traveled…I will be adding two new locations today. One is Aloha, Oregon where George lives who bought my book for his grandson. George and I went to high school together way back in the 60’s.  The other location is Washington D.C where Sam went for a holiday  with Paula and family….my shoelace supplier. In fact she sent me a few photos of her visit that I will now share with you….Thanks for that Paula.

Sam at the Capitol. Washington DC

Sam at the Korean War Memorial.

Sam at the Smithsonian Museum.

Sam at the Lincoln Memorial.

Do you have a camera ??? would you  like to take a picture of   Sam in front of  the sign for your town or any other place you might visit and send  it/them my way?   I think I will make a special page on  http://samsweirdafternoon.wordpress.com …and post all the photos I receive.  Oh, oh….I just thought….this could be another collection of mine.  Just one little photo from each of you and send it to 3rdwave@mts.net .  Please don’t send any photos with people in them unless you don’t mind me posting it .

***************************************************

Talking about my collections…it is time for a new one to begin…this time it will be weird pictures and things…

Look at the centre window…..yikes !!!

.

This morning was a bit sad for me…you see…as I was driving to my next Day Care visit…minding my own business…going the speed limit…I noticed a little moving object just ahead of me on the quiet road I was traveling…As I got closer I realized it was a little prairie  dog…and all I could think was  …Oh No!!..Please don’t move …                                                                                                                                                                                               .

.

If he  had not moved..or if I was going faster or slower… I would have passed by him without incidence… just as I had done many times in the past…However today was not that kind of day….and before I knew it he ran across the road.

I closed my eyes for a second…hoping …just hoping  that maybe he made it across the road…Afraid to look back…But I did …and there he was….lying still in the road …not moving….Oh No!!….What had I done???…I had taken his little life …I had killed this tiny little creature…but here was nothing I could do …and I felt so sad….It was an accident…Accidents happen…Right????…..What a way to start off a day!!!  If  there is a prairie dog heaven and you..little one…. are looking down on me right now…..I must say…I am so sorry!!!!!!

Ok…change of topic…Ear Worms…ever hear of them????….I read an article about them today and …maybe like you I thought they were talking about some strange parasite or disease…Yuck…not something I ever want to get!!!….But I was so wrong…Ever get a tune in your head one day that you keep hearing over and over and over again all day..or week????…..For me lately it was…Singing in the Rain….Anyway…those tunes are called by some…Ear Worms….I suppose because you keep hearing them over and over and although they are in your head, not your ears…it is like you are hearing them with your ears…..and so the name.

Funny thing, until I just wrote about my last ear worm…I had forgotten about it…but I have a funny feeling that ….IT’S BACK!!!…Is that all it takes???…the mention of a song???…So…right now are you bringing to mind a song???…and will that song stay with you now because you brought it to mind?…Oh no…what am I doing???….Am I causing an epidemic of ear worms by just bringing it up???…Oh no….not again..I am going to have to  say I’m sorry again????……I suppose I should apologize to all of you…my visitors…if I have given you an EW today.

Today at the Miami DayCare …we had fun…reading…clapping…singing and clapping again.  My Sam doll was passed around…everyone wanted to hold him for a minute…so they did!!  Then I went outside and played in the sand box and water table.  Fun time.

Life’s Tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.
Benjamin Franklin

Being an author is tough work. Not only do you have to write a story and get it published some how…you also have to be ready for the onslaught of interesting questions and comments  that may come your way once your book is out….Here are some that I have been asked….

  • Where did you get your inspiration from?
  • Sam…how did you come up with him as your character?
  • When will we be seeing another Sam adventure?
  • Is this a sequel? Will there be a sequel?
  • Maybe you will get on TV… on Oprah?
  • Maybe there will be a movie about Sam?
  • Who did the illustrations for you?
  • When did you start writing?
  • Remember me when you become famous..OK?
  • Are you making money yet?
  • What have you learned about the process?
  • What has been the most difficult part of it all?

I am usually decently  quick on my feet…but this is a whole new experience…and some of these caught me off guard..some surprised me…..but I think I have developed my repertoire of answers for if and when I need them. Will there be more??…Will I be ready for them???I sure hope so.

And book signing… although it can be fun…. it can as well be a bit stressful…. So far… I have a collection of  three Sam  books …that will be mine to keep. You see, I have made the mistake of spelling a few names wrong. …Now that is a faux pas for sure. But with the hustle and bustle of people all around…whew…the simplish task can become daunting. So now…I always have a pad beside me when signing and make sure to write the name down on the page… prior to writing it in the book so I  get the spelling correct….It is amazing some of the names I have had to write.

This is such an interesting, fun, challenging,  learning experience…Don’t they say we learn best from our mistakes???…if so…I am going to be a very wise old women at this rate.

The musician's toilet

A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I was thinking about change the other morning as I sat in my friend’s kitchen, writing  my next blog post  and looking out their windows .It was then I realized how refreshing the  new view was as I looked out. You may be wondering…why  write in someone else’s kitchen ? Well, a bit of a favor for friends…as they were both at work, they needed someone to be there for when  the cable guy came…so there I was.

Anyway…Change…that is what I want to talk about.  Having a different view of the snow that morning made me wonder…if I was enjoying the change so much …why is it that we are so often afraid of change in our lives?  Is it that as we become older,  are we way too set in our ways? Or is it that we are just stubborn ? Or, is it fear…fear of the unknown?

So, who are you… when it comes to change in your  life?   Me , I will admit, I take some comfort in cosistancy…and change?.. I never really thought too much about the subject…but I do know……doing some new things for the first time has been difficult.

Starting a blog was one of them. I knew I should have one if I wanted to let people know about my book.   But if I made a blog,  who was going to read it?  And if anyone actually did check it out , what would they think of me and my ramblings?  How would I come up with subject matter time after time…and how would I make it not boring? Afraid? Yes…I would say so. Writing a blog would mean putting myself out there….it made me think of  those dreams I’ve had…..where I get to where I’m going and find myself  naked!!!  Now…Why would a person want to subject themselves to that?

However, feeling it was necessary but feeling   totally intimidated… I worked for hours and  developed …So you wanna be a writer.  As of right now my blog is only  two and one half months old…but tonight …it is at the 2,000 hit mark…and my book is not even launched yet!!!!

Good thing I decided to step into the scary.. unknown.  Little did I know …it would be such fun.

Is there an unknown you would like to step into but are afraid? Go for it, it might just awaken the stranger in you.

And now for shoes….Of course I have a another  interesting shoe for you…..

A shoe with wings.
