Flower Pounding

This  is a fun , inexpensive and easy craft idea.

materials…white paper or white fabric, colorful flowers, a rock

Lay paper or fabric on table….put flower right side down on surface…cover with a second piece of  paper .( You can draw a circle around the flower area so the child will know where the flower is located) …hold rock in hand and pound..hammer with the rock  on the area where the flower is located…keep pounding until most of area is touched…lift off top surface…color from the flower will have transferred to the bottom surface…Voila!!!   Repeat the process to get lots of color transferred.   Child can then draw on and around the colors…or …the child could draw a picture first and then do the pounding.  Lay lay it out in the sun to dry.

It might be good to do one first …to show the child the process as you explain.

Great activity to do when camping or on a family trip or excursion.   Much of the material can be found outside.

Kids love the pounding/hammering part the most. No paper or fabric with you????   How about using that white or light-colored T-shirt your child packed for the trip???    or  do this activity on one of the pages of a book your child brought along.  Use your imagination!!

Reminder to Parents….

It is important to keep in mind for young crafters/artists …the process is more important than the product…Always!!  If the activity includes the making of a face and the child wants to color the skin purple…let that happen.  If a child and wants the nose to go above the eyes…just say “I like the nose!!”  not  “The nose is too high”. Remember…this is not your creation.  What you might do is …have fun making  a face  along with your child.
